What is Drama Therapy?
Do I need to be creative to do Drama Therapy?
Everyone is creative whether you identify with your creativity or not. As we get older it is easy to lose touch with your creative side, but it is always there and drama therapy can help you reconnect with it.
You don’t have to have any experience or interest in acting or theatre to benefit from drama therapy. Seth can gradually introduce you to options for creative expression and help you navigate the boundaries of comfort and growth.
Developmental Transformations?
There are many forms of Drama therapy, but the kind Seth practices is called “Developmental Transformations” (DvT for short). DvT is flexible, improvisational, and highly engaging. In DvT, the therapist enters into an imaginal world with you and helps you address your treatment goals using play and narrative deconstruction methods. Embodiment and creative distance allows DvT to get to the heart of matters efficiently and with containment. Many people find DvT to be unique, refreshing, and fun.
Why might I want to try Drama Therapy?
So often words may fail us, but art and embodied expression offer additional options to capture the unspeakable. Sometimes it’s easier to show your experiences and dreams rather than grappling with finding words to explain. Also, sometimes it’s just fun to reconnect with play and imagination.
Drama therapy also offers acts of witness and community. Humans are social creatures -we are meant to struggle and grow together. Shame thrives in the dark; Theatre sparks empathy.
Please note: Seth is not currently practicing psychotherapy. Therefore, DvT drama therapy should not be considered a substitute for psychotherapy or other medical treatments.
How does it work?
1. Intake
In the first session or two I will ask you questions to get to know your real life interests, strengths, and challenges. This will help us formulate potential treatment goals and will give me some ideas about how we can use your strengths to work toward your goals.
2. Move
Next, we stretch to prepare for some simple movement exercises. Seth will guide you through games that resemble “follow the leader” in order to tune in and begin to access your body’s inherent knowledge of what you need to help yourself feel better.
3. Play
Once you’re warmed up, Seth will lead you through a series of playful encounters designed to help you with your treatment goals. An outside observer might say that it looks like we are “playing pretend,” but the themes we explore are often quite deep and personally relevant. Many people find the experience to be thought provoking and invigorating.
